Margot

Warren held the journal out to Margot, and she shook her head, wrapping her arms around herself. She didn’t want to know what it said. Not now while guilt and sorrow and a burning sensation she couldn’t quite place were tearing through her body, all warring for precedence. She gulped air, trying to shift the constriction in her throat as she raked her fingers through her hair.

The door banged open and Emil rushed in. His gaze darted from Penny to Margot to Warren and then back to Margot as confusion wrinkled his brow.

“What happened?” he asked, Dale appearing in the doorway behind him.

“Nea … she …” Penny shook her head and swallowed. “She’s dead.”

Emil gripped the door frame. “How?”

“We don’t know,” Penny replied. “But the journal we couldn’t open … the enchantment was linked to her life force and it just lifted.”

Something bumped against the back of Margot’s legs and she fell backwards, only to be caught by the bed. This was worse than Kalhanna. After the purge, she hadn’t known the truth either way, and that gave her hope. But there was no way Nea could be alive if the journal was open. Was there? Was Warren mistaken about the nature of the enchantment? He had to be. But if he was not and Nea was dead, did that mean Garret was too? If he wasn’t, there was no way he could return from the Between without Nea’s magic to work the portal. Another wave of dread lifted bile into the back of Margot’s throat. They hadn’t discussed how they would get home, had they? In fact, Nea had avoided the subject.

“Mother damn her!” Margot’s knuckles stung and she pulled them back from the wall to study the grazes that stood angry against her flesh.

“Margot,” Penny said softly, the cloying kiss of her keen rolling across the back of Margot’s skull.

“No, Penny. I want to feel this. I need to feel it.” She pressed her fingers against the grazes. Instinct told her to heal them, but the hot sting of pain was cutting through her inner turmoil, soothing it.

The sensation of Penny’s magic retreated, and Warren cleared his throat, giving the journal a little shake in Margot’s direction. A loose paper fluttered free and landed by Emil’s feet. He retrieved it and held it out to Margot.

Her name was the only word written on it, the ‘M’ slanted slightly to the right and the rest of the letters a delicate mix of loops and curves. She shook her head. “I can’t … You read it.”

Emil drew a steady breath and unfolded the parchment. “Dear Margot, I am sorry.” He paused.

“Is that all it says?” She swiped the itchy wetness away from her cheeks. She needed to bundle herself into one of Molly’s hugs and never let go.

Emil licked his lips. “If you are reading this, then I didn’t manage to stop Evard. I am sorry I didn’t warn you sooner. I thought I could put an end to his plans without getting anyone else involved.
